The brief for the final project of the degree was to design a building of medium size on a brown field site somewehere within the greater extents of Bath. Unlike all other projects in our degree the building type was not defined, therefore we had the unique opportunity to produce a piece of architecture that defined ourselves. The project I chose to follow was to design a new church and community centre for my church in Bath, Hayhill Baptist. This gave me huge possibilities since there has not been a new build church built in Bath for over 100 years, giving this project a unique and challenging edge to it. The main part of the brief is shown below.
'This is the final project of your degree programme.
The project will require each of you to position yourselves in the debate which centre on the projects' common themes and it provides the opportunity for each student to further explore, develop and define their architectural identity. As the conclusion to your degree this should allow each of you to conceive and execute a coherent, integrated and resolved architectural design which draws upon the full range of skill, knowledge and experience which you have gained in the course of your studies.
It provides a counterpoint to the particular demands of the Basil Spence project and the opportunity for you to prepare your own brief, on a site of your own choosing.'
